Motion Control – Linear Servo Controller Amplifier to Control Voice Coil Motors

Forestville, CA,   —  The SCA814 Linear Servo Controller was specifically designed to control single phase, non-commutated devices like voice coil motors.  like it’s field proven predecessor the SCA754 is a high performance single axis DC motor controller and amplifier system.  It is comprised of a highly integrated single PC board level product with a cohesive interface.  This card provides current amplification and analog servo control interfaces.  The single-phase characteristic of the current amplifier makes it particularly well suited for DC motors such as galvanometers and voice coils.  It was specifically developed for control of motor applications requiring both high temporal and spatial servo precision, such as machine vision, inspection, scientific imaging, medical imaging and other business applications.  This amplifier interfaces directly to many of the Equipment Solution motor/stage solutions.
Besides galvanometers the SCA814 is directly compatible with all the ESI linear voice coil stages and the optical scanners.  A bipolar linear or switching regulated power supply is required by the SCA814 amplifier.  Typically better performance can be achieved when using a linear power supply.  Equipment Solutions has several high-current supplies for this purpose including the SPS15 ±15V DC Switching Power Supply .

Quiet 3-to-1 Speed Reducers Using Traction Drive Technology Feature 98% Efficiency!

motion control speed reducer

RMI Drives-Logo

North Babylon, NY – Rolling Motion Industries (RMI) has released for production the next two in it’s series of highly efficient speed reducers. These 3-to-1 speed reducers use “game changing” traction drive technology. The MAR-17-1-3.1 and the MAR-23-1-3.1 Speed Reducers feature 98% efficiency and with only 6 moving parts they typically out last conventional gearboxes and speed reducers by a factor of 3. The MAR17-1-3.1 Speed Reducer is designed for input speeds up to 3600 rpm with 10 to 20 in/lbs of torque, and the MAR-23-1-3.1 Speed Reducer is also rated for speeds to 3600 rpm but with an input of 20 to 30 in/lbs of torque. As the output speed is reduced by a factor of 3 the output torque increases by a factor of 3.

Using an engineered traction fluid with a coefficient of friction of just 0.1 to 0.12 that cools and lubricates the traction drive these high efficiency speed reducers generate up to 72% less heat even after days of continuous operation. There is no slippage or lost motion between the input and output shafts even though there is no metal to metal contact as the traction fluid is continuously changing from liquid-to-solid-to-liquid as the driving and driven elements interface in the drive. Creating 38% lower dB at 3000 rpm than conventional gearboxes these people friendly speed reducers are ideal for use in medical equipment such as mobile hospital equipment and dialysis machines as well as pumps, blowers, fans, turbo and super chargers, conveyers, HVAC systems, and other power transmission and motion applications.

Having low vibration, and no torque losses from 10 to 3000 rpm, these speed reducers featuring traction drive technology lets a motor operate at peak efficiency while having a damping effect on a motor’s torque ripple. These revolutionary speed reducers are available with an optional overriding clutch. Incorporating standard NEMA mounting dimensions, these speed reducers can be easily integrated into new and existing applications.

About Rolling Motion Industries (RMI)-

About Rolling Motion Industries (RMI): In 1993 John Pawloski and his brother Ray took over the family business, Jewelers Machinist Co. They realized they needed to switch from outdated conventional thread grinders to CNC thread grinders. As a result, Jewelers Machinist Co is recognized as the source of some of the most complex thread grinding in the industry. The concept for the RMI traction drive came from John in 2007. Working in that high precision industry aided John in the development of the RMI Traction Drive.

In the years that followed, the design of the individual components and formula of the engineered traction fluid were finalized, testing was completed, a patent granted, and production begun. The RMI Traction Drive is one of the most efficient ways to transmit power from one point to another. Utilizing rolling motion, RMI is able to transfer power at various ratios with minimal energy loss. Tested against V-belt, direct drive, chain, and gearbox setups, RMI Traction Drives offer energy saving benefits through true efficiency rating percentages up to 98%. The high efficiency of the traction drive allows electric motors to run at their peak efficiency ranges.

There are many applications where it can be used from automotive to industrial to medical. The RMI traction drive can be used in the electric vehicle market and precision applications. Offering benefits such as low backlash and no back driving, it set a new standard for “high efficiency”.

The New Sales Funnel – Adapting to Change

Motion Control Marketing – Adapting to the New Marketing Paradigm

A message for Motion Control Marketers

The role marketing is expanding!

As a marketer of technical products I make an effort to view the sales process as a consumer.  Fact – All consumers are not alike.  Speaking only for myself, although, I believe there are many like me, that want to do their own research, and ONLY talk to sales when they are ready to.

Depending on the consumer it may be early or late in the sales process.  Perhaps the sales funnel should reflect an overlap rather than have a line at which the process switches from marketing to sales.  That said, consumers need to be aware of a product, have their interest aroused, have cause to consider the product, and have an interest in purchasing the product.  Marketing today necessarily has a bigger role in the sales process than in years past.

Years ago (pre-internet) a potential customer saw a product release or an ad in a magazine, circled a number on a “Bingo Card” and got a sales call made on him.  Today the potential customer sees a product release or ad and starts to do his own research.  In addition to some reviews, he will find data sheets, application notes, videos, dedicated web pages, and blogs online (products of the marketing department) all of which will be carefully reviewed before a sales person is ever called.

Developing and implementing an effective Business-to-Business marketing program for technical products that:

Creates Awareness of …

Generates Interest in …

Causes Consideration of …

Raises the level of Intent to …

and

Aids in the Evaluation of …

Does not have to be expensive!

However, It does have to be well planned …       … and that plan has to be carried out.

For large companies the marketing program can include: Paid Advertising, Product Releases, an expensive interactive Website, a Blog, Data Sheets and Brochures.  All effective tools to create Awareness, Interest, Consideration, etc.

For smaller companies an effective reasonably priced, affordable marketing program can include: Product Releases, a Website, perhaps a Blog, and Data Sheets.

Product Releases are great for creating Awareness of, they also generate Interest in, and cause further Consideration of your products, each time the release is seen in a different print or online publication.

The Website does not have to have an expensively developed “WOW” factor as much as it has to have the information needed to determine if your product is right for the prospects application, or if you have the capability of supplying a custom product to meet or perhaps even exceed his or her needs.

A simple inexpensive blog, can also be an effective marketing tool.

Data Sheets …   … Create a straight forward format for an online data sheet that provides the technical data needed helps in the Evaluation that then can lead to the Sale!

For over 30 years I have been marketing exclusively Motion Control products. First as a Marketing Manager and then as Marketing Consultant.  I have enjoyed working with several companies for over 20 years.  Email me at dwtechcom@gmail.com and see how inexpensive an effective marketing program can be.

Motion Control Application- Maxon Is A Part of NASA’s InSight Mission!

Swiss motor ventures deep under the surface of Mars.

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – The InSight probe landed on Mars to shed new light on the formation of rocky planets. The mission entails driving a measuring probe five meters deep into the Martian ground. maxon engineers pulled out all the stops to make their motor fit for the job.

Tension was mounting among fans of space exploration, as the robotic InSight probe landed on Mars on November 26. If all goes according to plan, the stationary lander will proceed to carry out various measurements over a period of two years and provide important insights into Mars and the formation of Earth. The mission is being conducted by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for NASA.

Motor rams penetrometer 5 meters deep into the ground

DC motors from the Obwalden-based drive specialist maxon motor are also on board. A compact motor-gearhead combination with a diameter of 22 millimeters is used in the HP3 probe developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It is designed to determine the temperature profile of the planet. Specifically, the maxon drive is located in a rod-shaped penetrometer, nicknamed “the Mole” by the developers. This penetrometer is autonomously driven five meters into the ground. To achieve this, the motor tensions a spring with each revolution. The spring then releases with great force, executing a powerful downward punch. In this way, the “Mole” gradually burrows downwards – over a period of several weeks, pulling along a cable that is equipped with sensors to help the researchers determine the thermal state of the interior of Mars and draw conclusions about its origin. Since Mars is a rocky planet like Earth, the scientific results may also help gain a better understanding of our own planet.

Special solution for more than 400 g

Mars is not a very friendly environment for technology. Nonetheless, more than a hundred maxon drives have already proven their worth on the Red Planet. The current InSight mission, however, posed additional challenges for the Swiss engineers. To efficiently drive the penetrometer into the ground, the DC motor needs to withstand forces in excess of 400 g – and more than 100,000 times. It took a number of variations and failed tests to find the right solution. The result is a standard DCX 22 motor, greatly modified with additional welding rings, bearing welds and specially shortened brushes. The utilized GP 22 HD gearhead, on the other hand, only needed Mars-specific lubrication.

Say hello to an old acquaintance

The InSight probe is powered by two solar panels for the duration of its mission. To save costs, JPL repurposed designs from the successful Phoenix mission, using a maxon DC motor developed some time ago to extend the solar panels. This type of motor, an RE 25, has ensured that NASA’s Opportunity rover has been active on Mars for more than 14 years (even if it is currently in deep sleep due to a sandstorm). Thus, two generations of maxon drives come together in the InSight robot probe to jointly contribute to the mission’s success.

Traction Drive Technology

From RMI (Rolling Motion Industries ):

We offer a new patented technology that is going to be a game changer in many industries. Traction drives have been around for over 100 years, but they were complex and expensive. What we offer is simple and cost-effective. Our technology gives smooth, quiet, efficient and accurate rotation. These offerings solve current problems in the industry, and RMI is the solution. With the use of the most modern CNC equipment and precise tooling at our partner/manufacturer FCS, we can handle any quantity, any size drive, and any application.

Due to the simplistic design of our patented product we are able to penetrate many markets. In most circumstances, a superior product means a much more expensive product, but this is not the case with RMI. Simplicity is the essence of brilliance is a saying and our patented technology sure fits that category. RMI started as a visualization of a new way to get to point B.

This new traction drive from Rolling Motion Industries called the RMI Marmalade includes six moving parts — a cup shaft component, a toroidal shaft component, twin precision-matched bearings for shaft support, one pair of rolling elements between the shaft elements, and engineered traction fluid to help the balls transmit torque. The engineered traction fluid inside the sealed housing works for power transmission and cools and lubricates the drive. A microscopic gap between the rolling elements lets the fluid slip through — but as the fluid squeezes through this microscopic gap, high pressure causes the fluid to temporarily solidify. Then the solid structure of the fluid transmits torque from input to output shaft. Material science has enabled this new traction drive mode of operation. Traditional traction-drive fluids have friction coefficients of 0.05 to 0.06. The new drive employs fluid with coefficients of friction of 0.1 to 0.12 — particularly useful for the transfer of torque through smaller normal forces … even with operation that makes slippage between input and output shafts impossible.

New Panel Mount Brush Servo Drives for Centralized Motion Control Systems!

Motion Control – Servo Drive
Motion Control Servo Drive

Motion Control - Servo2Go

Greenville, DE -Motion Control Components – The AxCent™ (Axes for Centralized control schemes) product platform brings the proven and powerful performance expected of ADVANCED Motion Controls, with improvements to the design architecture that utilize years of experience in the industry and the latest advancements in modern servo system design.

As technology continues its shift from analog to digital, there is still strong demand for analog designs. The reason? Analog drives provide some attractive benefits:

  • Simplicity – It’s easy to train your people to set the correct switch and potentiometer settings.
  • Proven Track Record – AMC have been building analog drives since their inception. They have continuously improved their designs to mirror the advances in component technology.
  • Performance – When tuned to maximum performance, analog current loops can often times achieve higher bandwidth and faster response than digital current loops.

How can analog outperform digital? It all comes down to the components. In a digital system, A/D conversions and processing time can add delays ranging from 20 to 100 microseconds. This may not seem like a lot, but in the highest bandwidth systems delays of this magnitude create a sizeable phase lag.

The other driving factor is cost. Large volumes and mature designs make prices attractive for everyone (except our competitors)

Motion Control Application – Please smile with maxon motors!

Motion Control Application – Digital SLR cameras can deliver extremely sharp photos – regardless of whether the photographer is a professional or a hobbyist. Not only does the skill of the photographer, but also the technology inside the camera play a key role. maxon drive systems help to create lightning-fast images.

motion control - leica lens with motor

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – A maxon A-max 12 with precious metal brushes is installed in the central shutter of the S lens. The maxon A max program stands for high-quality DC motors with an optimal price/performance ratio.

With its Leica S system, camera manufacturer Leica offers a unique combination of performance features for digital photography. It combines the image quality of a medium-format camera with the handling, speed and flexibility of a small-format camera. The lenses used in the Leica S system have a built-in dedicated processor for controlling the auto focus. The lenses are also available with a central shutter for maximum flexibility when using a flash. Besides the focal-plane shutter, which is integrated in the camera, the central shutter is one of two common designs. The central shutter is typically located at a “central” position in the lens assembly, between the optical lens elements. It consists of several blades arranged around the optical axis in a concentric pattern. When the shutter release of the camera is pressed, the blades snap back from this axis synchronously and let the light fall on the sensor.

With SLR cameras, the central shutter first closes after the shutter release, because all the settings were made with an open shutter. The mirror swings up, then the central shutter opens for the duration of the exposure before closing again. Finally, the mirror swings back into the path of light, and the shutter opens. Even though it employs the classic solution of mechanical springs for the efficient storage of potential energy, the central shutter is a piece of cutting-edge technology. The tensioned-spring principle contributes significantly to the extremely compact dimensions.

Small motor for high tension

The springs are tensioned by a specially developed maxon motor with a high-precision overrunning clutch and release their stored energy to activate the shutter blades when the shutter release is depressed. A specially constructed solution prevents the blades from rebounding when the shutter is opened or closed. A microprocessor-controlled pawl and ratchet mechanism controls the shutter cycle via two electromagnetically activated plungers.

The gear motor of maxon motor is used for tensioning three springs that store the energy for the central shutter. A maxon A-max 12 motor is used as the base motor. The gearhead is an all-new development and is adapted to the available space. This presented a special challenge to the gear motor in the central shutter of the Leica lens. What was needed and developed was a very compact, enclosed and sealed custom version of the gearhead with perpendicular power transmission to toothed gear of the central shutter through a crown gear, for a life span of more than 100.000 releases.

Motion Control – Highly Efficient 2 Way Traction Drives Reduce Motor Torque Ripple up to 84%!

North Babylon, NY – Motion Control Components – Rolling Motion Industries (RMI) has released two new traction drives. The MAR-17-2-2.1 Traction Drive and the MAR-23-2-2.1 Traction Drive. These highly efficient 2-Way gearless traction drives with only six moving parts use an engineered traction fluid with a coefficient of friction of just 0.1 to 0.12. The MAR-17-2-2.1 and MAR-23-2-2.1 Traction Drives have demonstrated an up to 84% reduction in motor torque ripple when measured at the output shaft of the motor and then measures at the output shaft of the traction drive. The MAR17-2-2.1 Traction Drive is designed for speeds to 3600 rpm with 10 to 20 in/lbs of torque, and the MAR-23-2-2.1 Traction Drive is rated for 3600 rpm with 20 to 30 in/lbs of torque.

RMI Drives-Logo

Having no metal to metal contact these compact, high efficiency drives generate up to 72% less heat after 24 hours of continuous operation, and these permanently lubricated traction drives typically last three times longer than conventional gearboxes, They also create up to 38% lower dB at 3000 rpm than conventional gearboxes which is less than a typical home appliance. Even though there is no metal to metal contact there is no slippage or lost motion between the input and output shafts.

Operating at temperatures that are lower than a motor’s, with low vibration, and no torque losses from 10 to 3000 rpm, these traction drives permit a motor to operate at peak efficiency. Applications for these 2-Way traction drives which can operate in explosive environments (ie. zone 1 and 21) include: Medical (including patient handling), pharmaceuticals, wafer handling, robotics, conveyers, sorting, pumps, assembly, battery operated vehicles, and other power transmission and motion applications.

These revolutionary drives are available with an optional overriding clutch. Incorporating standard NEMA mounting dimensions, these drives can be easily integrated into new and existing applications.
