Fall River, MA – Motion Control – Now even stronger, more efficient and with yet more combination options: There are new additions to the maxon family of X drive products. Several long versions of brushed DC motors, with higher torques and more power, are being added to the product range, together with matching planetary gearheads. Each of the 3-stage versions can now be combined with the next smaller motor. This saves space, weight and costs.

Two years ago, maxon motor introduced a new generation of brushed DC motors – the maxon X drives. These are extremely powerful, easy to configure online, and ready for shipment within 11 days. Now, four more motor sizes are being added to the existing portfolio. The 14, 16, 22 and 26 mm diameter models are now each available in a long version (L), which offers higher continuous torque and higher continuous output power.

At the same time, maxon motor is introducing four new GPX planetary gearheads, in the sizes 14, 19, 26 and 37 mm, compatible to existing products in the program. These gearheads are designed with scaled gear stages. Each of the new 3-stage gearheads can be driven with the next smaller motor. This brings many advantages, as the resulting drive system is smaller, lighter and more economical.

That’s not all, starting immediately, the existing GPX 16 and GPX 32 models are available in various versions and can be equipped with ceramic axles to reduce wear. Customers looking for a particularly low-noise gearhead have the option of choosing plastic planetary gears.

Maxon also expanded the encoder portfolio. The new ENX 16 Easy absolute encoder is available as an SSI or BiSS-C version, according to the customer’s requirements.

All new products are available in the online shop starting immediately. They can be easily configured together with the other maxon X drive products: Customers select the desired motor, the matching winding, brushes and shaft length, as well as the gearhead and encoder. The configured product is ready for shipment in 11 days or less. For more information, go to dcx.maxonmotor.com.

Portescap Logo

West Chester, PA — Motion Control — Portescap introduces the next frame size in the DCP range of Athlonix™ high power density brush DC mini motors. Athlonix DCP motors offer an optimized price-to-performance solution ideal for a broad spectrum of applications. Available in a 16 mm diameter, the new 16DCP motor features an energy efficient coreless design with an optimized self-supporting coil and magnetic circuit, which ensures optimum price-to-performance is delivered.

Athlonix 16DCP motors are available in 2 variations, precious metal commutation and graphite commutation, both featuring an Alnico magnet inside. The unique constant force spring design for carbon brush ensures consistent performance. An REE (Restriction of Electro Erosion) coil is an available option, which ensures extended life of the motor and provides an environment of intrinsic safety especially at high speed conditions.

With maximum continuous torque up to 2.63 mNm and higher stall torque than similar motors, Athlonix 16DCP motors are ideally suited for use in applications such as medical & industrial pumps, gas analyzers, security & access, power tools, mesotherapy guns and tattoo machines.

“Athlonix motors are powered by a proprietary self-supporting coil resulting into maximized magnetic flux and ampere-turns for a given diameter” says Sunil Kumar, Brush DC Product Line Manager at Portescap. “In contrast, typical self-supporting coils have inherent ampere-turns limitations that affect the magnetic flux density in the magnetic circuit, which further limits power output and endurance of the motor,” he says.

“Due to lower motor regulation factor compared to comparable motors available in the market, our new 16DCP has higher load carrying capacity at minimum reduction in speed leading to more uniform power” says Sunil Kumar.

Athlonix motors are available with encoders and gearheads of various sizes and ratios. They are manufactured in an ISO certified facility and are RoHS compliant.

Portescap offers the broadest miniature and specialty motor products in the industry, encompassing coreless brush DC, brushless DC, stepper can stack, digital linear actuators, and disc magnet technologies.  Portescap products have been serving diverse motion control needs in wide spectrum of medical and industrial applications – medical, life science, instrumentation, automation, aerospace and commercial applications, for more than 70 years.

Motion Control Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Position Actuators!

Motion Control – Akribis Systems Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Position Actuators Available from Electromate!

Electromate - Akribis Motion Control Voice Coil Motors and Actuators

Motion Control - Electromate-Logo

Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control – A “voice coil” is a generalized term that refers to any galvanometer-like mechanism that uses a solenoid to move an object back-and-forth within a magnetic field.

Voice coil actuators, or non-commutated DC linear actuators, consist of a permanent magnetic field assembly (permanent magnets and ferrous steel) and a coil assembly. The current flowing through the coil assembly interacts with the permanent magnetic field and generates a force vector perpendicular to the direction of the current. The force vector can be reversed by changing the polarity of current flowing through the coil.

Voice coil actuators are typically used in focusing applications, oscillatory systems, mirror tilting, and miniature position control.

Electromate offers a full family of Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Modules from Akribis Systems. Features include:

  • Direct drive, zero cogging, and zero backlash

Motion Control Application – On the Trail of Wild Animals!

Elephants, lions or entire herds of antelopes –with a digital camera specially designed for documentaries, wild animals can be captured quickly. Motors made by maxon ensure that there are no chromatic aberrations in the recordings!

Maxon motion control Camera components

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — 35 degrees Celsius in the shade; the sun is burning hot. Not a single cloud in the steel-blue sky: That is the grassland plains of Kenya, with its fascinating wildlife and impressive landscapes. Documentary film teams from across the world are on the trail of wild animals. A dangerous job; no one wants to get too close to lions, elephants and company. A jeep roars through the plains on the search for the animals of East Africa. In the noon sun, a lion appears on the horizon. It is lying in the grass, almost invisible – and unfazed by the approaching jeep. The camera operator is ready. The ARRI AMIRA digital camera is ready to shoot. In a jiffy the king of the savanna has been captured – as an image.

The temperatures put high demands on the team and the equipment. Gunter Föttinger, technical lead Embedded Image Processing at ARRI, explains that the camera contains a special cooling system, which has been designed to operate perfectly at temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius. Additionally each camera is subjected to a cold test of –20 degrees Celsius, which the video cameras can handle without problems.

Maxon motion control components

Perfect for documentaries

Animal documentaries are large productions made with as small a team as possible. The ARRI AMIRA has been specially designed for documentaries and single-operator use. The Configurable digital cameras, manufactured in Munich (Germany), have a constant high image quality (frame rate up to 200 frames per second), like the larger model, the ARRI ALEXA, which has been used for Hollywood films such as “Iron Man 3” and others.

Maxon motion control Wild Animal Photography

Filter change with maxon motors

The motor-controlled ND filter (neutral density filter) installed in the ARRI AMIRA is moved in front of the sensor in situations with very bright outdoor light conditions. It reduces the intensity of the image in a “neutral” way. Neutral means that no chromatic aberrations are generated, instead, only the brightness is reduced. ND filters are important for achieving the desired look during the image capturing.

Maxon motion control Camera Components

Maxon RE 8 motors with MR encoder and GP 8 A planetary gearhead are used in this application. The brushed DC motors drive spindles in the sensor assembly that moves the filter into place in front of the image sensor and back again. ARRI chose maxon drives, as “it is the only 8-millimeter motor on the market that provides a sensible solution for a rotary pulse encoder with the same diameter,” says Michael Haubmann, hardware architect at ARRI.

Motion Control - Electromate-Logo

Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada — Automation motion control – Integrated Stepper Motors – Ideally suited for applications such as packaging and labeling, automated test and measurement, automated assembly and life sciences, StepSERVO™ motors from Applied Motion Products provide the next evolution integrated step motor technology. Starting with a proven integrated motor design, we add a high-resolution incremental encoder and closed-loop servo firmware to create a motor that offers the best step motor performance available today. StepSERVO™ motors offer the same high-torque-at-low-speed and excellent holding torque characteristics of open loop stepping motors with the advantages of true closed-loop control. These advantages include the ability to create peak torques from the motor up to 50% higher than the normal torque range of the same step motor running open loop. Closed-loop also means the motor only draws current when it needs it, so step motors now run cooler than ever before.

StepSERVO™ motors feature:

  • NEMA frame size 17, 23 and 24. StepSERVO motors utilize 5000 line incremental encoders (20,000 counts/rev)
  • NEMA frame size 11. StepSERVO motors utilize 1024 line incremental encoders (4,096 counts/rev)
