Motion Control – Maxon BLDC Motor EC 19 and Planetary Gearhead GP 19!

High power up to 120 W, speeds up to 100,000 rpm, sterilizable 1000 times from Maxon Motors

Maxon motion control EC19 Motor and GP19 Gearhead

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — The new brushless drive with a diameter of 19 mm has been specially designed for high speeds and features low heat development and extremely quiet and low-vibration running. This little powerhouse has applications in centers for miniaturized processing, hand-held tools and medical technology. When combined with planetary gearheads, many possible variations are available for applications in these key markets.

With its modular construction, this new brushless DC motor is available in three performance classes: The cost-optimized EC 19 at 60 Watt, the strong and high-speed EC 19 at 120 Watt and the sterilizable high-end version EC 19 at 120 Watt. The internals of the drives are responsible for their individual characteristics:

  • The EC 19 at 60 W is equipped with a magnetic circuit that is designed for speeds of up to 80,000 rpm.
  • The maximum continuous torque is 12 mNm and the motor contains no Hall sensors.
  • The EC 19 at 120 W has been designed for speeds of up to 100,000 rpm and delivers a high continuous torque of 24 mNm. Versions with and without Hall sensors are available.
  • The EC 19 Sterilizable at 120 W may be sterilized in an autoclave 1000 times. With a maximum permissible speed of 100,000 rpm and 24 mNm continuous torque, this drive also withstands high temperatures and harsh steam cycles. This is achieved through careful selection of materials and through protection of the components such as in the hermetically sealed rotor magnet.

With maxon motor’s winding technology, it is possible to offer various voltage versions. The stator has been designed without slots. Therefore, no cogging torque occurs resulting in excellent control properties and extraordinarily smooth running. Together with an optimally balanced rotor, low-noise and low-vibration operation is easily achieved.

Maxon’s new sterilizable planetary gearhead, the GP 19 M is ideal for applications requiring very high speeds – input speeds of up to 40,000 rpm. To accommodate such high speeds, the toothing and materials have been especially designed to minimize friction. A key demand placed on the material is 1000 sterilization cycles. The gearhead contains a special shaft seal. Worth noting is the no-need to disassemble the drive unit for the sterilization process.

The new 19 mm drives are particularly suitable for surgical and dental devices, such as arthroscopic shavers and bone drills. There is also a focus on respirators and CAD/CAM spindle drives.

Motion Control Application- maxon motors in the Formula Renault 3.5!

The Formula Renault racing series has become one of the most important racing series for future world-class Formula 1 drivers. Since 2012, a new, more powerful V8 engine has been roaring under the hood of the World Series racing cars. Inside it, maxon motors are responsible for adjusting the electronic throttle system.

Maxon motion control application - RenaultRace Car

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – The World Series by Renault is a combination of several racing series. The main series is the Formula Renault 3.5. The prestigious Formula Renault 3.5 has become one of the most important racing series for future world-class Formula 1 drivers. In recent years, several drivers have succeeded in making the jump from the Formula Renault 3.5 to the Formula 1, such as Jean Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo of the Scuderia Toro Rosso, as well as current world champion Sebastian Vettel from Germany

The Formula Renault 3.5 is considered to be a preparation series for the Formula 1 and therefore the vehicles have many of the characteristics of the top motorsport class: Carbon brakes, semi-automatic gearshift, left foot brake, and, since 2012, a powerful V8 engine and an adjustable rear wing. In the new World Series vehicles developed by Renault, Zytek engines are used. Zytek is a British company that produces control systems for the automotive industry, drive technology, engines and hybrid technology. All 26 vehicles used in the Formula Renault 3.5 are driven by the new Zytek engines. The engine has been designed especially for the Formula Renault series. The 3.4 liter V8 engine, with its 530 hp at 9250 rpm, provides 50 hp more than the previous engine. And where the weight is concerned, the new Renault again has the edge, as it is around 15 kg lighter than the previous model. A fly-by-wire throttle control system has been integrated into the engine. This system, also called “drive-by-wire” in motorsport, electronically transmits the gas pedal movements to the engine controller. In principle, it handles how far the throttle valves are opened at which pedal position.

This gives the racing driver the ability to obtain a specific torque from the engine at a certain gas pedal position and the respective engine speed. In the case of the Formula racing car, there are three different levels (pedal maps) for different route conditions.

Maxon motion control application - Renault Race Car Motor

Strong vibrations conquered easily

Accurate control of this throttle system is handled by a maxon DC motor and planetary gearhead. This technology makes the racing cars approx. four seconds faster per round. The maxon DC motors from the RE motor family and the gearhead from the GP family were specially adapted to meet the demands of the high vibration and high temperature environment. During the test phase, the maxon engineers – in close cooperation with Zytek – verified that the engines can function problem-free under the challenging loads. “We began testing maxon’s products in July 2011 and have been extremely impressed with their technical backup and service. The motors need to work in a very hostile environment and maxon really understood the product and the problem and even made suggestions on how to improve the product to help us,” said John Manchester, Operations Director at Zytek. Paul Williams, Sales Engineer at maxon motor uk, commented: “We are delighted to work in partnership with Zytek. 80% of our business comes from modifying our products for our customers and we thrive on challenging projects.”

Motion Control Application- Maxon Drives Help People Walk Again!

At the first Cybathlon in Zürich, researchers are presenting the world’s best exoskeletons – devices that enable paraplegics to walk again. Motors from Switzerland play a central part in this development.

Maxon motion control application - Helping People Walk Again

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – On October 8th 2016, people with paraplegia are going on a footrace at the Cybathlon in Zürich. Aided by exoskeletons, they will compete against each other on an obstacle course to show the public how far advanced technology has come in this area.

Switzerland, is playing a central role in this process. Many of the exoskeletons are fitted with components from the canton of Obwalden – components without which there wouldn’t be a lot of movement to be observed.

From the planet Mars to an exoskeleton

Robotic suits have to be both powerful and lightweight. Too much weight would cause the battery to drain in no time. This presents a big challenge to developers. Most of the motors that are strong enough to power an exoskeleton are large and heavy. This is why engineers are turning to the Swiss company that already developed the drives for NASA’s Mars rovers: maxon motor. maxon drives are powerful, lightweight, and energy-efficient, meaning that they can conserve battery power, and be very durable.

“We spent decades perfecting our motors”, says maxon CEO Eugen Elmiger. A lot of money has gone into research and development. It was worth it: These days, the motors from Switzerland can be found everywhere, in robots, airplanes, cars, and medical devices.

Knowledge yields an advantage in the market

Providing competent technical support for customers is just as important as delivering high-quality products. Small businesses and start-ups often approach maxon with specific drive technology problems that they lack the expert knowledge to solve by themselves. maxon motor, in turn is able to help with its extensive experience in the field, a strength that lets the company stand out from the international competition. “Our knowledge and the ability to give expert advice are a great advantage in the market,” says Elmiger. The Cybathlon is a good example: In the field of exoskeletons, the Swiss company has a pretty clear idea about what’s important besides choosing the right motor. As a result, quite a few of the participating teams are using products from Switzerland. The same is true for other disciplines, such as prosthetic arms or legs and electrical wheelchairs.

For examples, read maxon’s exclusive Cybathlon brochure or visit the new site for technology enthusiasts – drive.tech

maxon supports the Cybathlon as a sponsor and partner

The Cybathlon games are organized by the ETH Zürich and are being held for the first time on October 8, 2016 at the Swiss Arena in Zürich. Around 80 teams from all over the world will be participating. The machine-assisted competitors will compete against one another in six disciplines: prosthetic legs, prosthetic arms, exoskeletons, motorized wheelchairs, bicycles with muscle stimulation, and virtual racing using thought control. What’s not allowed at the Paralympics is an absolute must at the Cybathlon: the use of state-of-the-art technology. “Our aim with the Cybathlon is to break down barriers between the general public, people with disabilities, and scientists,” says ETH professor Robert Riener, who invented the Cybathlon.

The Swiss drive specialist maxon motor supports the Cybathlon as a sponsor and partner. The company will be present at the games with a workshop for the teams and a small exhibition about the history of prosthetics.

Motion Control – NEXEN Eclipse Servo Motor Brakes Deliver Significant Advantages!

Moton Control - NEXEN Eclipse Servo Motor Brakes

NEXEN Servo Motor Brakes

Vadnais Heights, MN – Motion Control Components – Nexen Group’s Eclipse Servo Motor Brakes offer distinct advantages over spring-engaged, electrically-released brakes. With Nexen’s servo motor brake, no energy is consumed when the brake is disengaged. (Electrically-released brakes consume power continuously, even in disengaged mode, creating heat inside the brake, which detracts from its ability to produce full torque.) It is spring-engaged/air-released (no electric coil) to keep the brake cool until it’s needed.

Nexen’s servo motor brakes are designed to mount to the shaft end of servo motors up to 20 horsepower, including NEMA 23, 34 and 42 frame sizes. The brake’s square-shaped housing allows flexibility to custom make the mounting features match the motor dimensions. The brake’s output end duplicates the motor mounting features. The input end bore accepts the motor shaft and is fixed inside the brake with a split-hub/shaft collar arrangement.

Key features and benefits of the Eclipse servo motor brakes:

  • Fail-safe, power-off engagement
  • High torque – 50% more torque than competitive models (torque range 2 to 125 Nm)
  • Zero backlash for accurate holding
  • Integral flanges adapt to any servo motor or AC motor brand and mounting style
  • High torsional rigidity, no system wind-up
  • Models configured to hold the machined end of a ball screw
  • Can be used for intermittent dynamic stopping
  • Spring engaged for holding and E-stop applications
  • High speed capability – engineered and balanced for servo applications

The Servo Motor Brake is a perfect complement to Nexen’s RPS system, holding an accurate position while work is being performed.

Motion Control – Ethernet/IP Marquees connect directly to the Rockwell Ethernet/IP Network!

Motion Control Components Ethernet IP Marquees from Servo2Go

Servo2Go-Logo

Greenville, DE — –Motion Control Components – The Ethernet IP Marquee revolutionizes the industrial market on how a marquee sign should connect and communicate on the Rockwell Ethernet/IP network. The Ethernet IP Marquee has a built in WEB server, eliminating the need to install software to program the marquee sign. Setup of the display is as simple as opening a WEB browser on your computer and entering the IP address of the marquee sign. With its fully integrated package, the Ethernet IP Marquee allows the user to configure and broadcast plc data and message information without programming communication blocks within the ladder logic code of the plc.

The product’s innovation allows the user to set up the functionality of the marquee sign and simply connect to the Rockwell plc. The messages displayed on the marquee can be alarms, machine performance, or production data. These messages are selected and displayed through internal registers from the plc. The format of these registers can be any combination of bits, words, or strings. The Ethernet IP Marquee has an additional ethernet port built into the marquee sign. This second port gives the marquee the flexibility to broadcast information to any computer on the plant network through the web server. This computer can monitor production data and collect real time information from the plant floor by simply entering the IP address of the marquee.

Also, third party spreadsheets can be used to monitor and store the information broadcasted by the marquee sign. With no software to install, the Ethernet IP Marquee stands alone as the new innovative way for a marquee sign to communicate on the Rockwell Ethernet/IP network.
