MIT EMERGENCY VENTILATOR (E-VENT) PROJECT COPY

MIT has launched an emergency research project with a team of Engineers and American clinicians to address the question:

Is it possible to safely ventilate a COVID-19 patient by automatically actuating a manual resuscitator?

Their process in approaching this question is to first identify the minimum requirements for a low-cost ventilator, based on the collective wisdom of many clinicians, design against these requirements, conduct immediate testing, report the results, iterate and facilitate discussion.

Also referred to as an Electric Cylinder, this linear actuator is an ideal low cost, high accuracy replacement for hydraulic and pneumatic linear actuators. This clean, compact, voice coil motor has a high force to size ratio with 5.3 lbs (23.5 N) continuous force and 16.7 lb (74.4 N) of peak force at 10% duty cycle with a housing measuring just 2.00 in. (50.8 mm) dia. x 1.00 in. (25.4 mm) long.

The precision ground 0.1572 (3.993 mm) diameter shaft has an internal thread, and the housing has threaded mounting holes on each end for easy integration into current and future applications. This clean, quiet, efficient, low inertia, brushless actuator featuring an internal shaft and recirculating ball bearing is ideal for: Medical devices, antenna positioning, testing, sorting, assembly equipment, work holding and clamping, scanners and laser beam steering and filtering, laser machining and drilling, wafer handling, optical focusing, and dynamic vibration absorption,. The new GVCM-095-089-03 Linear Voice Coil Motor (also known as linear DC motor) features a continuous force of 63.9 lbs (284.1 N) and 202.0 lbs (898.4 N) of peak force at a 10% duty cycle.

Guided by a long-life plain bearing that can allow side loads up to 3 lb (13.5 N), the precision ground 0.236 inch (6.0 mm) diameter shaft with an internal thread has a stroke length of 0.5 in. (12.7 mm). The quiet, efficient, smooth, cog-free motion of this low inertia brushless GVCM-095-089-03 Linear Voice Coil Motor is ideal for: Clamping, work holding, sorting equipment, assembly, medical devices, antenna positioning, testing, slide actuators, shutters, doors, valve actuation, wafer handling, and optical focusing.

This new voice coil actuator features: High speed, high acceleration/deceleration, zero backlash, high accuracy, high repeatability, and a high force to size in either direction, in a housing measuring just 3.75 in. Fall River, MA — The majority of traffic accidents are caused by human error. In the future, computer-controlled cars will significantly reduce the number of such accidents. Driver assist systems, such as adaptive cruise control (ACC), brake assist systems, or lane departure warning systems (LDW), can save lives. Lane departure warning systems warn the driver if the vehicle is drifting out of its lane. The LDW determines the vehicle’s position in the lane with the use of various optical sensor systems and computers. If the car is in danger of drifting out of the lane, the system activates an electric motor in the steering wheel that causes the wheel to vibrate, warning the driver.

A luxury car manufacturer has engaged maxon to supply the motors for this application. The base DC brushed motor is maxon’s A-max 16 (precious metal brushes, 2 W), modified for the application with an eccentric weight and a specified bearing. In order to prevent the other vehicle systems from being affected by the electromagnetic fields of the motor, it has been equipped with special EMI suppression for automotive applications. The small drive system must meet specific requirements: It needs to be low-noise, dynamic, feature high power density, and fit in a narrow space – requirements that maxon’s small A-max 16 easily masters..

Designed with compact form and power density in mind, the micro-sized FE060-25-EM can outperform larger-sized digital servo drives and still be integrated into tight spaces.

At just 1.5 x 1 x 0.6 inches (38 x 25 x 16 mm) in size, the footprint of the drive is approximately the same as two standard postage stamps. In other words, four of these drives can fit on a standard business card. Even with its small size, the FE060-25-EM can supply brushed, brushless, stepper, and linear servo motors with up to 25 amps continuous current and 50 amps peak current.

In December, Maxon Group acquired the British geared motor manufacturer Parvalux Electric Motor, Ltd. The acquisition and the addition of Mr. Uzzolino to the team demonstrates maxon group’s continuing commitment to becoming a provider of complete systems. Ultimately, the acquisition opens interesting new markets requiring larger drives and motion systems such as patient handling within the medical technology sector (stair lifts, electric wheelchairs, etc.) and industrial applications (robotics and transport systems, conveyors).

John Uzzolino comes to maxon Group with 20 years’ of experience in industrial motion control and mechatronics applications. John started his career as a Sales Engineer working with a high tech distribution company, focusing on solving motion control and mechatronic applications for machine builders in the Northeast U.S. John then went to work for a local machine builder, helping them bring their automated test and measurement products to the North American market. Most recently, John worked for two European control manufacturers, helping them develop customers in the U.S. market.

As the Business Development Manager for Parvalux, John will be responsible for managing and promoting the Parvalux products in the United States, initially focusing on the industrial and e-mobility markets. “I’m excited to be on board and help bring a strong European brand to the U.S. market,” says John Uzzolino. “Parvalux has positioned themselves well to be a high-quality product at a competitive price, while offering both standard and highly customized solutions globally. Van Nuys, CA – — The New AU300-AER three-axis Gimbal Mount from OES (Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc.) features full 360O rotation of each axis. This three-axis gimbal mount handles loads to 10kg (22.5 lbs) and has a clearance of 300 mm x 300 mm, (11.8 in. x 11.8 in.) around the roll axis stage. The Azimuth stage rotary table is mounted on a large 360 mm (14.173 in.) x 360 mm (14.173 in.) x 13 mm (0.512 in.) plate with handles and has predrilled accessible mounting holes for easy integration into new or existing applications, and for increased stability. The AU300-AER three-axis Gimbal Mount is ideal for mounting: cameras, optics, lasers and instrumentation for scanning, tracking, positioning, pointing, and other applications.

The 3 axes: azimuth, elevation, and roll axes are drived by bi-directional stepper motors capable of microstepping, and has knobs for manual adjustments. The roll axis table measures 100 mm (3.937 in.) in diameter. The knobs may be replaced with optical encoders for position verification and closed loop positioning. Each axis features: low backlash worm gear drives and precision “V” groove and cross roller bearings for very high resolution of 3.6 arc seconds, and repeatability and positional accuracy to 36 arc seconds. Travel speed of each axis is 8 O per second. Electrical connections are made using three 9 pin DB-9 connectors.

The AU300-AER Motorized Three-axis Gimbal Mount can be ordered as a complete plug-and-play system with a multi-axis controller, joy stick, track ball, or keypad, and with a 30 mm thru hole in the roll stage.

Van Nuys, CA – — Motion Control – OES (Optimal-Engineering Systems, Inc.) has added a new, larger, high load, precision stage to it’s extensive line of precision XY stages. The AU200-170×170 stage is a low profile stage measuring just 108 mm (2.252 in) high with a compact footprint (including the motors) of 458.5 mm x 458.5 mm (18.032 in.) The linear travel of the X and Y axes is 170mm x 170mm (6.692 in.), and the resolution of each axis is 20 microns (non-micro-step) or 1 micron (20 micro-steps per step motor driver in use), repeatability is 2 microns, and the positional accuracy is 3 microns. The 4 mm per-turn lead screws have just 2 microns of backlash and the stages have preloaded V-groove and crossed roller bearings contributing to the high precision and stiffness of the AU200-170×170 Stage. Designed for applications such as: alignment, assembly, laser drilling, machining, medical, industrial, semiconductor handling, testing, scanning, and optical applications, this compact, low profile black anodized aluminum XY stage is easy to integrate into new or existing systems.

The XY stage’s table measures 300 mm x 300 mm (11.8 in x 11.8 in.) and features a precision pattern of drilled and threaded mounting holes to facilitate the addition of tooling or fixtures. Additionally a table with a large open aperture is also available.

The standard two-phase (1.8o) stepper motors have knobs for manual adjustments of each axis of the stage, however, the knobs can be replaced with incremental encoders for position verification or closed loop operation. As an option, servo motors and compatible motion controllers are also available from OES, or the AU200-170×170 Stage can be ordered as a complete plug-and-play motion control system.

Machined from a solid block of self lubricating ETX, linear bearing-blocks have high strength, excellent wear resistance, low coefficient of friction, and excellent dimensional stability at higher temperatures as there is no other materials such as PTFE seals or lubricants these bearing-blocks are maintenance free.

Custom designed for use in a nuclear power plant these linear bearing/pillow blocks travel on ceramic coated shafting (also supplied by LM76) completely submerged in radioactive water. Designed with a slight interference fit between bearing ID and shaft, contaminates are scraped from the shaft’s surface. The low frictional characteristics of ETX have little impact on drive force. They are now available in Inch and Metric sizes.

ETX bearing-blocks are also FDA/USDA/3-A Dairy compliant and are also are ideal for: Pharmaceutical, medical, food, and dairy processing applications.

EXT features a high continuous service temperatures up to 210°F (100°C) and offers good chemical and abrasion resistance, low moisture absorption, and resistance to staining. These ETX linear bearing-blocks with the slight interference fit keeps the bearing free from debris and bacterial contamination, are not affected by biological fluids, mild acids, can be washed down with cleaning agents, and steam cleaned.

Don’t need solid EXT bearing-blocks consider the FDA/USDA/3-A Dairy compliant electroless nickel coated or stainless steel pillow blocks with PTFE linear bearings and Snap-in EXT Scraper Seals which are available for closed linear bearings, and closed pillow and flange blocks.

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control Components — JVL Industri Elektronik A/S, one of the world leaders in the field of integrated servo – and stepper motors introduces a new compact and slim stepper motor. The new ServoStep integrated stepper motor series MIS171 to MIS176 have a NEMA 17 42×42 mm flange and include controller with 6 different industrial Ethernet protocols, absolute multiturn encoder, closed loop and M12 connectors. This new motor family is based on the latest microprocessor and cooling technology and an advancement compared to previous designs.

All the necessary electronics in a stepper system are integrated in the motor itself and are similar to the concept used by other JVL motors, making it very easy to use in all kind of motion control stepper or servomotor applications. The motor contains everything needed to solve a modern control task, either as a stand-alone with own easy programmable motion controller or controlled from an external PLC or PC. 8 I/O points can be individually configured as digital input, digital output or analogue input. Modbus RTU or CANopen provide easy connections to a PLC or HMI. An ActiveX/OCX driver is available to make simple interface to LabView, Excel, VB or other Windows-programs. Up to 254 axis can be connected on the same RS485 bus.

Motion Control Industrial Ethernet: 

Profinet, EtherCAT, Powerlink, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP or SERCOS III are available and for EtherCAT and SERCOS III synchronization and drive profiles are available. MACtalk can use Ethernet for commissioning the motor so no need for RS232/RS485 converter or additional cables. The motor has the ability to be upgraded with other protocols or newer versions of the same protocol at any time Because of the upgradeability, the JVL Industrial Ethernet module is also ‘future proof' as newer versions of the protocols will always fit into the design. The motor is equipped with two Ethernet connectors and a built-in switch, enabling line topology without any extra expensive hardware. Several LEDs, enabling technicians and operators to get a quick status overview.

The motors can be operated as stand-alone units or controlled from a PLC or PC. The 8 I/Os can be individually configured as digital input, digital output or analog input. As standard, it is possible to communicate with holistic systems via for example Modbus RTU or CANopen. The MAC motor standard protocol that is also supported makes it possible to connect up to 254 other JVL integrated motors. The MIS17 series allows connectivity to all industrial Ethernet interfaces such as Profinet, EtherCAT, Powerlink, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and SERCOS III.
