Motion Control – FDA Compliant Components

To: OEMs “Tooling Up” for Urgently Needed Medical Products! Use FDA Compliant Off-the-Shelf Linear Motion Components!

motion control FDA compliant components

LM76

E. Longmeadow, MA — Motion Control Components – Linear Motion – In dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic many companies have volunteered or been requested to produce urgently needed medical products such as: Masks, gowns, and ventilators. “Tooling Up” quickly to produce medical grade products for some companies can bring challenges. In addition to needing FDA compliant materials that will be used in the actual masks, gowns, and ventilators, the tooling used to manufacture these products may also need to meet FDA compliance standards. Depending on the product being manufactured, the tooling may need to be: Washed down using caustic chemicals, cleaned with high pressure steam, or sterilized with high Intensity Ultra Violet light or radiation.

Ordering custom FDA compliant linear motion slides and XYZ stages can result in long delays. As an alternative, many companies have linear motion slides in stock for immediate delivery, however, they may not be FDA compliant. In many cases it is the bearings that are not in compliance. LM76 manufactures several types of FDA compliant linear bearings and pillow blocks that are drop-in-replacements for existing bearings. FDA compliant bearings and pillow blocks from LM76 will not trap contaminating debris and can be thoroughly sanitized following Sanitation StandardOperating Procedures (SSOPs). SSOPs are detailed schedules and procedures specifying what to clean, how to clean, how often to clean, and the record keeping used for monitoring.

A helpful component selection guide from LM76, “Linear Bearings, 6 Simple Steps – FDA Compliance, Wash Down Compliance,” details the linear motion components available from LM76 that are FDA/UDSA/3A-Dairy compliant. Included are: Foodstream electroless nickel plated pillow blocks, PTFE lined stainless steel bearings, ceramic coated linear bearings, self-aligning corrosion resistant linear ball bearings, and Thomson® Super SmartTM corrosion resistant, self-aligning, high load linear ball bearings, and solid ETX pillow block/bearings. Shafting to compliment the type of bearing selected includes: Class L Stainless 303/304/316, 440C case hardened stainless, Rc 60 case hardened steel with an Armoloy coating and also Rc78 Class L for enhanced hardness and wear resistance. End blocks and shaft supports that have a ceramic or electroless nickel coating are also available, as well as new ETX Scraper Seals that prevents intrusion of contaminates adding another line of defense.

LM76 also designs and custom builds linear slides from Stainless Steel and other FDA wash down compliant materials.

Motion Control – Inductive Angle Encoder by Zettlex!

motion control encoders

motion control - electromateVaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control – Zettlex position sensors (IncOders) use non-contact, inductive technology for precision angle measurement. Rather than the bulky transformers of traditional inductive sensors, Zettlex sensors use printed circuits. This enables compact, accurate, lightweight and robust position sensors with no contacts, no delicate parts, no maintenance, no hassle – just accurate measurements – all day, every day. IncOders are ideally suited to harsh environments – where potentiometers, optical or capacitive devices may prove unreliable.

IncOders have 2 main parts – a Stator and a Rotor – each shaped like a flat ring. The large bore makes it easy to accommodate through-shafts, slip-rings, optical-fibres, pipes or cables. The Stator is powered and the Rotor is passive. The Stator contains the electronics to receive power and generate an output signal. The output signal from the Stator shows the true absolute angular position of the Rotor relative to the Stator without the need of any motion.

IncOder inductive angle encoders do not require compliant or special couplings and the Rotor & Stator can simply be screwed to the host product. Precise mechanical mounting is not required and there are no bearings. Whereas optical or capacitive angle encoders can be unreliable in harsh conditions – notably with condensation or dust – Zettlex angle encoders are generally unaffected by foreign matter and IP67 rated versions are available. Unlike capacitive devices, there is no need to earth the Rotor or Stator. Robust, hard-anodized aluminium alloy housings and monolithic constructions are used throughout. There are no contacting, delicate or wearing parts, so there is no need for periodic replacement, service or maintenance. In other words, IncOder angle encoders are true ‘fit and forget’ devices.

Features include:

  • Robust Angular Position Measurement for Extreme Environments
  • High-reliability Inductive Angle Encoder Technology
  • Simple installation; ‘fit and forget’ technology
  • Non-contact technology for high reliability in extreme environments
  • Proven in Aerospace, Defense, Medical & Industrial applications
  • Over 4 million product configuration options available

Motion Control – Protection Against Contamination: Breathing Clean Air!

Motion Control – Protection Suit Motor!

Maxon DC motors are used in the blower components of high-quality protection suits.

motion control Maxon Motor

motion control - maxon logoMaxon was selected for the compact and lightweight DC motor design, ironless winding, strong magnet and producing very little vibration and noise output. Most importantly, a brushless DC motor was mandatory as a brushed motor may cause sparks that would ignite within the suit. When designing the suit, special attention was given to the placement of the blower unit sewn inside the suit, to avoid the need for heavy straps or air supply hoses. A Li-Ion battery provides more than four hours of operation of air supply with a flow up to 600 liters per minute.Taunton, MA -Motion Control – Protection suits containing an air blower element that fills the entire suit with clean air, have been used by health professionals when faced with contaminated environments. The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented situation where these type of suits have been utilized. Maxon DC brushless motors are found inside these specialized suits. The DC motor is efficient, high-speed and robust.

Motion Control – Compact, High Resolution Resonant Scanner Features Wide Frequency Range and Fully Integrated Control & Drive Electronics!

Motion Control – Resonant Scanner

motion control -miniature scanner

Forestville, CA — The RS-25 Resonant Scanner from Equipment Solutions is optimized for applications that typically require a means to scan an optical beam. This motion control resonant scanner is a very efficient means of oscillating or vibrating a mirror or similar load at a fixed frequency. Up to a 25 mm diameter mirror can be set at the factory to oscillate at a fixed frequency of 20 Hz to 550 Hz, and mirror sweep can be adjusted to a total of 90 degrees optical. The very compact RS-25 Resonant Scanner measurers just 25 x 58 x 21 mm and all electronics necessary to control and drive the scanner are fully integrated.

motion control - Miniature actuators

Typical applications include: 3D laser digitizing & measurement, printing, raster scanners, laser projectors, laser marking, laser range finding, barcode scanning, confocal microscopy, FLIR, retinal image acquisition, semiconductor inspection, laser tuning, and biological and medical research.

The RS-25 Resonant Scanner can optionally be configured with a very high-resolution position sensor. This non-contact electro-optic sensor provides a means to directly monitor the angular position of the user’s load with micro-radian scale resolution and repeatability. The sensor naturally produces an analog signal proportional to position and is noise limited, however, options include a high-resolution 16-bit Analog-to-Digital converter to quickly sample and report the mirror position (up to 1500 samples-per-second) at any time.

Unparalleled performance and reliability have been achieved through a continuous and careful attention to every design detail. This relentless drive has generated patent pending concepts and ideas that distinguish the RS-25 Resonant Scanner. The RS-25 Resonant Scanner has a virtually unlimited life. Carefully designed flexures mimic a conventional spring-mass harmonic motion system, and a small voice coil motor coupled to the system compensates for small system loses that would otherwise dampen the oscillation.

Two connectors are accessible from the side of the unit. One, a mini USB connector, supports high speed USB communications and power sourcing. The second connector provides electrical control and signal interfaces (e.g. analog amplitude control and feedback (e.g.) mirror position).

Additional features include: Very low power drive electronics (low heat emission), vertical or horizontal mounting, high frequency stability (to 0.05%), broad frequency selection, no wearing parts, shock and vibration tolerant.

Equipment Solutions, Inc. (ESI) is a provider of engineering and manufacturing services. ESI specializes in the design and production of automation and instrumentation products including motion control components and sub systems. Motion Control Application – Driver assist systems can help save lives by alerting driver of potential danger!

Motion Control – Application – Driver Assist Systems Help Save Lives!

motion control - maxon logoMaxon A-max 16 brushed DC motor – This drive with a diameter of 16 millimeters (precious metal brushes, 2 Watt) was developed for use with an eccentric weight and a specified bearing.
motion control - application - brushed motors

Fall River, MA — The majority of traffic accidents are caused by human error. In the future, computer-controlled cars will significantly reduce the number of such accidents. Driver assist systems, such as adaptive cruise control (ACC), brake assist systems, or lane departure warning systems (LDW), can save lives. Lane departure warning systems warn the driver if the vehicle is drifting out of its lane. The LDW determines the vehicle’s position in the lane with the use of various optical sensor systems and computers. If the car is in danger of drifting out of the lane, the system activates an electric motor in the steering wheel that causes the wheel to vibrate, warning the driver.

A luxury car manufacturer has engaged maxon to supply the motors for this application. The base DC brushed motor is maxon’s A-max 16 (precious metal brushes, 2 W), modified for the application with an eccentric weight and a specified bearing. In order to prevent the other vehicle systems from being affected by the electromagnetic fields of the motor, it has been equipped with special EMI suppression for automotive applications. The small drive system must meet specific requirements: It needs to be low-noise, dynamic, feature high power density, and fit in a narrow space – requirements that maxon’s small A-max 16 easily masters..
