“New Design” Pillow Blocks from LM76!

Engineering edge - new design pillow block

When our customer, a major European manufacturer of machinery for the paper industry, informed us they were having failures with linear bearings in their robotic paper slicing system, we listened. As a robotic arm swings around (360 degrees) it slices the paper to length. After cutting the paper to length, a linear table below indexes new paper forward for cutting. After making the desired cut, the blade then passes through sharpeners below – located in the indexing table – where the linear bearings are located. As the blade passes through the sharpeners, it deposits a fine metal dust on the shafts. As the bearings pass over the shafts, the metallic grit invades the bearing – eventually leading to bearing failure. Because there are 32 pillow – 50mm – pillow block bearing assemblies, change-out is no small matter. LM76 designed an End Cap/Beryllium Scraper Seal kit which is retained in both ends of the pillow block. We were able to cut downtime by 90%. The customer is extremely pleased they found an answer. But the answer was not found in any catalog, it had to be designed and manufactured.
