Linear Motion – Voice Coil Actuators vs. Solenoids: What is the difference?

The question of whether to use voice coil actuators or solenoids for small displacement motion control applications comes up often.  This article explains the key differences between each product and why you might choose one over the other for your applicationA non-commutated DC linear actuator, typically referred to as a voice coil, is capable of a displacement in excess of 5 inches.  In addition, voice coil actuators, can move bi-directionally, and has a constant force over the stroke and can be used for closed loop position and force applications.

A solenoid can generate high forces at very short strokes, however it requires a spring return because they are operated unidirectional and the force output declines rapidly through the total displacement, and therefore are normally used only for short strokes, not typically longer than 0.5 in.  The typical application for a solenoid is the simple opening or closing of a switch or valve, and are not typically used for force or position control applications.

A voice coil generates a force based on an interaction of a current carrying conductor in a permanent magnetic field.

What is a Voice Coil Actuator?

Voice coil actuators or non-commutated DC linear actuators consist of a permanent magnetic field assembly (permanent magnets and ferrous steel) and a coil assembly.  The current flowing through the coil assembly interacts with the permanent magnetic field and generates a force vector perpendicular to the direction of the current.  The force vector can be reversed by changing the polarity of current flowing through the coil.

The force generated by the voice coil is proportional to the cross product of the current flowing through the coil and the magnetic flux in the permanent magnetic field, as dictated by Lorentz’ force equation.  Either the coil assembly or permanent magnetic field assembly can be used as the moving member in a voice coil actuator.

The force generated is relatively constant throughout the stroke of the actuator, with minor dips at the beginning and end of the travel length.

Voice coil actuators are typically used in focusing applications, oscillatory systems, mirror tilting, and miniature position control.

What is a Solenoid?

Solenoids consist of a coil that is contained in a ferrous steel housing and a movable steel slug or washer.  An electromagnetic field is generated by current being applied to the coil.  The magnetic field intensity determines the amount of force that can be generated by the solenoid.  When the power is turned off, the force drops to zero and the spring returns it to its extended position.

The forces are initially high, but as the stroke increases the force decreases.

Solenoids are typically used to open latches or open or close valves, and are either used to apply a holding or latching force.

Should I select a Voice Coil Actuator or a Solenoid?

If your application simply requires opening or closing a valve a solenoid might be an option, however they have limitations when it comes to force linearity and stroke length.

Due to the fact that voice coil actuators typically cost more than an off-the-shelf solenoid, many customers try and use a solenoid when a voice coil actuator is the more appropriate solution.  Some applications require a constant force throughout the travel length, and in these situations a solenoid is insufficient due to the diminished force through the travel, while a voice coil actuator provides constant force.  This is particularly important in oscillatory systems.  Another advantage that the voice coil provides is force control, without a feedback device, because the force output (at any position in the stroke) is directly proportional to the current input.

This type of actuation lends itself to generally a higher force density, thus achieving higher strokes and forces in a smaller package size to the solenoid counterparts.

Van Nuys, CA – Automation Motion Control – The new, SDLM-025- 070-01- 01 direct drive linear motor from Moticont, also known as an electric cylinder, features a built-in encoder, has zero backlash, zero cogging, and provides users with high acceleration, high speed, high resolution, and long life.  This direct drive linear motor features 1.25 µm (0.000049 in.) in of resolution.  This compact direct drive linear motor is just 1.00 in. (25.4 mm) in diameter and 2.75 in (69.9 mm) long.  Inside the motor housing, the linear optical quadrature encoder is directly connected to the shaft for the greatest possible accuracy.

This direct drive linear motor has a stroke length of 0.500 in. (12.7 mm) and a continuous force rating of 22.2 oz. (5.9 N) and peak force of 67.2 oz (18.7 N).  This non-commutated direct drive servo motor features: Quiet long life plain linear bearings, an integrated internal (1.25 micron resolution) quadrature optical encoder with differential outputs, and a non-rotating shaft.  Applications include: Manufacturing, semiconductor handling, inspection, medical procedure tables, antenna positioning, dampers, door & valve actuators, agricultural equipment, and adjustable office furniture.

Direct coupling of the load or stage to the low inertia non-rotating shaft eliminates backlash and allows for high acceleration/deceleration.  Both ends of the motor and shaft ends are drilled and tapped for easy integration into new and existing applications.   The SDLM-025-070- 01-01 Direct Drive Linear Actuator is also available as a complete plug-and- play linear motion system with a matching motion controller.

Longmeadow, MA –Linear Motion Control Application – When a privately funded research company was ready to move from their original Proof of Concept to a sustainable fusion reactor to produce clean sustainable energy, they realized that extremely heavy components would need to be assembled and disassembled and reassembled again for design modifications and maintenance. The completed assembly would be the length of two buses and easy alignment of the individual components would be critical.

The main reactor, the fusion containment chamber that is capable of containing a plasma medium of 10 to 15 million degrees is made of non-magnetic stainless steel as are many of the components. The Plasma Medium could be described as a football shaped blob about 1 meter in diameter by 2 meters long. The plasma medium is injected from each end of the reactor assembly by Plasma Guns.

See photo to right – On each end of the assembly is a Plasma Gun. The Plasma Guns as are all the floor lever components, are positioned using LM76 Jet Rail Bearings and shafting. The Jet Rail Bearings and Shafting can be seen near to bottom of the picture.

In addition to the reactor, high energy particle beam generators are positioned at angles to the fusion containment chamber. These particle bean generators form and suspend the plasma medium for an indefinite period of time in the center of the containment chamber. These generators have to be easily positioned – by hand – to accommodate adjustments and re-assembly.

See photo to the left – Neutral-Beam Injectors are positioned around the Reaction Chamber to position and shape the Plasma Medium. These are also moved into position on LM76 Jet Rail Bearings and Shafting.

In addition to supporting the weight of the components, the bearings selected to move these massive loads during the construction and testing of the fusion reactor would have to be non-magnetic. Working with engineers, LM76 developed a custom 3 inch Jet Rail Bearing designed to carry both the weight of the fusion reactor and the high energy particle generators. In addition LM76 supplied precision ground, 3 inch 303 stainless steel (non-magnetic) shafting.

The custom manufactured Jet Rail Roller Blocks and 303 stainless steel shafting simplified the assembly/disassembly of the fusion containment chamber and components while ensuring critical alignment throughout travel.

This breakthrough fusion reactor is still in the experimental stage. A commercially viable reactor would need to contain 100 million degrees. Why is the project so important? Because in addition to producing sustainable energy, its only by-product is, environmentally safe, “helium ash.”.
