The horizontal Air Bearing Linear Stepper motor has a 38.0 in [965 mm] stroke and generates 12.0 lbs [53.1 N] of continuous force. It is guided by precision roller bearings along the platen. Integral air bearings are used to maintain the required motor air gap. The vertical Z-axis motor has a 0.50 in [12.1mm] stroke; generates 6.0 lbs [26.7 N] of continuous force and 118.0 lbs [80.1 N] of peak force. The 1.0-micron resolution encoder allows for precise closed loop positioning. It comes supplied with bearings that allow smooth and rigid motion. The motor coil is the moving part of the assembly in order to reduce the moving mass of the axis.

Van Nuys, CA – Motion Control – The compact open aperture HCDS-051-032-013-01-B1-30 and the HCDS-051-032-013-01-B1-01 Voice Coil Stages from Moticont have a foot print of just 2.000 in. (50.8 mm) wide by 5.000 in (127.0 mm) long and feature positioning resolutions of 30 microns and just 1 micron respectively. These precision stages allow the user to select the level of precision needed for an application.

The 1 micron resolution HCDS-051-032-013-01-B1-01 Voice Coil Stage features cross roller linear bearings whereas the 30 micron HCDS-051-032-013-01-B1-30 Voice Coil Stage uses linear ball bearings. Each of these stages has a 0.97 in. (24.6 mm) range of motion with 6.3 lb. (28.2 N) of continuous force and 20.0 lb (89.9 N) peak force. These brushless, clean, quiet, efficient, low inertia, high acceleration, zero cogging and high speed voice coil driven stages have a built-in home switch for accurate initialization. As the coil is fixed and the magnetic assembly moves, there are no moving electrical components to fail. Designed for closed loop servo operation an integral quadrature optical encoder with differential outputs is included..

The stages’ 1.509 in (38.3 mm) x 2.000 in. (50.8 mm) tables are equipped with 4 8-32UNC-28 mounting holes. Pre-drilled and counter-bored mounting holes in the base of the stages and a plug -and-play wired connector allows for easy integration into new or existing applications. These black anodized voice coil stages with a 0.500 in (12.7 mm) clear aperture are ideal for: Laser drilling and machining, optical focusing, testing, laser steering, mirror positioning, scanning, oscillation, switching, as well as precision applications in industrial, medical, metrology, and research fields.

The HCDS-051-032-013-01-B1-01 and HCDS-051-032-013-01-B1-30, Voice Coil stages are also available in XY or XYZ configurations, and can also be ordered as a complete plug-and-play system with a controller. Santa Clarita, CA —– Linear Motor Positioning Stage – H2W Technologies introduces a miniature XY brushless linear motor positioning gantry (SRS-002-007/003-003-01-XY), which is ideal for applications that require a low profile and more than 2 inches of stroke. The stages are driven by brushless linear motors which are guided by precision recirculating linear ball bearing blocks and rails. Each axis incorporates a 1 micron resolution linear encoder for position feedback. The dual axis system can also be supplied with fully integrated electronics to operate the stage under synchronized dual axis closed loop motion control. Brushless linear motor driven positioning stage gantries are ideal for applications that require precise synchronized control of motion profiles for customer payloads

The bottom axis has a 1.75 in [44.5 mm] stroke; and generates 5.1 lbs [22.6 N] of force at 100% duty and 20.4 lbs [90.4 N] of force at 10% duty. The top axis has a 2.75 in [70 mm] stroke; and generates 2.7 lbs [11.9 N] of force at 100% duty and 810.7 lbs [47.7 N] of force at 10% duty. The stage dimensions are 5.25 in [133 mm] x 5.25 in [133 mm] x 2.77 in [70 mm].

The stage has a stroke of 12 in [300 mm]; generates 20 lbs [89 N] of continuous force and 60 lbs [267 N] of peak force. It includes a 1 micron resolution linear encoder.

Santa Clarita, CA — Automation Motion Control – Linear Motion — H2W Technologies’ dual axis linear motion stepper motors are ideal for open loop positioning applications requiring 2 axis of motion in a single plane. They can perform at speeds of up to 80 in/sec [2 m/sec] and strokes of up to 20 in x 30 in [0.5 m x 0.75 m]. Linear stepper motors are capable of very precise position, velocity, and acceleration control when coupled with a micro-stepping drive and indexer.

The moving assembly called the “forcer” is supported by magnetically preloaded air bearings that are imbedded in the active surface of the forcer. The bearings are designed to support the customer’s payload and to maintain the required 0.0005 in to 0.0010 in [12 to 25 micron] gap between the platen and the forcer.

The step and direction signal for each linear motion axis comes from two separate micro-stepping drives (2 or 4 phase). A 2 axis indexer is required to send step and direction signals to the drivers. For 2 phase motors, the full step is 0.010 in [250 microns] and for 4 phase motors the full step is 0.005 in [125 microns]. With micro-stepping, resolutions in the order of 0.5 to 1 micron are achievable.

The dual axis linear stepper motor is a complete 2 axis, single plane air bearing positioning system with the motor, the bearings, and the positioning system all built into one compact package. Integrating linear encoders with the stepper motor allows for a hybrid, closed loop positioning system.

Available in several off-the-shelf models, these direct drive linear motors feature resolutions of 5.2 µm (0.000206 in.), 1.25 µm (0.000049 in), and sub micron resolution. Compact, only 2 in. (50.8 mm) in diameter and 3.75 in (95.3 mm) long, and with the linear optical quadrature encoder inside directly connected to the shaft for the great-est possible accuracy, these motors can be easily integrated into new and existing applications using threaded features on the front and rear faces of the motor, as well as each end of the shaft.

The new SDLM-051 direct drive motors have a 1 in. (25.4 mm) stroke with a continuous force of 5.0 lbs (22.2 N) and a peak force of 15.8 lbs (70.2 N). Non-commutated, motors have zero-cogging, and the light weigh of the shaft allows for high acceleration/deceleration for higher thru-put, and direct coupling to the load increases accuracy and resolution. All automation SDLM-051 linear motors are available with a spring to retract the shaft to a home position in the event of a sudden shutdown, and they can be quickly customized to meet specific automation needs.

Originally, our customer specified LM76’s standard stainless, FDA/PTFE linear bearings in their linear actuator. This bearing met all the fundamental requirements: FDA/Caustic Washdown compliance, self-lubricating and no catastrophic (mechanical) failure mode. Initially, we felt the standard running clearance between bearing ID and shaft (.001 overall, .0005” either side) would be sufficient to clear debris. Not so. Thus, we needed a seal that would be FDA compliant, have a low “K” or wear factor and low coefficient of friction so drive torque wouldn’t be negatively affected. Since standard industry nitrile and buna seals were never in contention, we had to design a “scraper seal” from scratch.

John Tarbell (President and Internationally regarded Plain Bearing Expert) reviewed several materials and selected Ertalyte® PET-P because it met all criteria relative to FDA/Washdown compliancy, “K” (wear) factor, coefficient of friction, machinablilty and thermal expansion/contraction. The ETX seals were designed for a slight interference between bearing ID and shaft. In addition, a “spring area groove” was designed behind the scraper lip to allow for proper spring-flex action and to accommodate thermal expansion during operation. Lastly, undercuts were machined at both ends of the bearing shell to anchor the snap-in ETX scraper seals. Since the scraper lips are zero-clearance on the shaft, the interference fit prevents cheese residue from migrating beneath the seal as it scrapes the shaft surface.

Santa Clarita, CA —- – Linear Motion Positioning Stage — H2W Technologies introduces a high acceleration, brushless linear motor driven, XZ positioning stage gantry for controlled dual axis motion profiles of customer supplied payloads. The vertical axis dual rail stage (DRS) is a closed loop positioning system that can be used for high force positioning applications. The horizontal axis single rail stage (SRS) is a closed loop positioning system that can be used for low to medium force positioning applications. The stages are driven by brushless linear motors, guided by precision recirculating linear ball bearing blocks and rails. Each axis incorporates 1 micron resolution linear encoders. Dual shock absorbing dampers are incorporated into the stage to protect the stage and payload in the event of power failure. The dual axis system can also be supplied with fully integrated electronics to operate the stage under synchronized dual axis motion control. Brushless linear motor driven positioning stage gantries are ideal for applications that precision controlled synchronized motion profiles of customer payloads.

The vertical axis has a 13.8 in [350.5 mm] stroke; and generates 167 lbs [743 N] of force at 100% duty and 501 lbs [2224 N] of force at 10% duty. The horizontal axis has a 4 in [101.6 mm] stroke; and generates 50 lbs [222 N] of force at 100% duty and 150 lbs [666 N] of force at 10% duty.

Application Story – FDA/Washdown System Excels with Special Linear Motion Shaft Assembly from LM76!

E. Longmeadow, MA – — Linear Motion – Application Story – Dairy machinery manufacturers are under intense scrutiny by FDA inspectors when it comes to FDA material and caustic washdown compliance. Recently, LM76 was called by a large US dairy packaging company to review a problematic portion of their filling line. After each shift, the filling line is washed-down, has a caustic foaming agent applied to kill bacteria and then is final rinsed. The caustic foaming agent was destroying – literally eating – the aluminum shaft supports while shafting exhibited pitting and showed signs of minor corrosion. Additionally, there were areas where product got trapped and these locations were havens for bacterial growth. Because this system was in-place and our customer was the end-user, LM76 engineers had to use direct drop-in replacement com¬ponents. What to do?

First, we decided to forgo the original bearing system that used 440c stainless linear ball bearings running on 440c hardened shafting. After reviewing loads and speeds we determined that our stainless FDA Compliant, self-lubricating linear bearings would do the job. By choosing sliding friction bearings, we were able to switch the less corrosion resistant 440c with a better 316 stainless shafting while eliminating greasing of the linear ball bearings. To increase shaft hardness, corrosion resistance and decrease “Stick/Slip” of the sliding bearings, we applied an Armoloy coating. This coating raises the shaft hardness from Rb25 to Rc78. Additionally, both the 316 stainless and the coating are FDA compliant. Along with enhanced hardness, corrosion resistance and FDA compliance, this coating has an inherent lubricity that aids in lowering “Stick/Slip”. “Stick/Slip” is a condition inherent in sliding linear bear¬ings. It takes a greater force to move a sleeve bearing linear system from static position than it does to maintain dynamic motion. Thus any assistance in lowering this value is meaningful. Now that we had the correct shafting, we turned our attention to the aluminum shaft support Here we made 2 design decisions:

1. We applied a ceramic coating to the aluminum “T” support. This coating is FDA compliant, is file hard (resists scratching) and is highly corrosion resistant.

2. To enhance system flushing to remove trapped product that could produce harmful bacteria, we segmented the support system to allow for proper evacuation of all washdown solutions and debris.
