Motion Control – Case Study: Precision Ground Ball Screw Drives Universal Pipetting Module!

Motion Control Case Study – Pipetting

COVID-19 Testing / Sampling Applications

motion control - Pipetting Module

montion control - productsReaching New Levels of Speed, Lifetime, and Force Sensitivity

Woburn, MA –Motion Control Components Ball Screws – Case Study –

Situation:

In the area of automated laboratory equipment, servo-controlled pipetting modules are a key component of high-throughput systems. A major, global OEM had been using an off-the-shelf linear actuator to drive the pipette. This actuator had a limited range of capability in terms of speed, positioning accuracy, and force sensitivity. Although it met the minimum technical requirements and was cost-effective, engineers soon were asked to push performance to the next level.

Challenge:

The company decided to develop a next-generation system. Throughput was essential, as it wanted to target the largest hospitals and laboratories handling tens of thousands of samples annually. The pipetting module also needed to have enhanced flexibility to support a greater variety of operations. It should allow for a wider range of speeds and be highly accurate in both positioning and bottom-finding. Engineers were also tasked with achieving a 10-year lifetime with little or no maintenance. This high lifetime was critical because their business model included free field service. To meet these new requirements, the actuator would have to be redesigned. In particular, the bearing configuration did not support the required accuracy and sensitivity. The supplier was unwilling to modify its design. Company engineers realized that they would have to design a custom actuator.

motion control steinmeyer ball screw

Resolution:

They came to Steinmeyer for a precision ground ball screw. They knew that Steinmeyer had world-class quality and a very wide selection of miniature screw sizes. For this project, they were able to consider shaft diameters of 5mm or 6mm, with pitch down to 0.5mm! They selected a 6mm screw to meet the challenge. Company engineers conducted extensive performance testing on the first prototype quantities. They put the new module through an exhaustive regimen of motion, and measured positioning, force sensitivity, friction torque, motor current, and other parameters. They verified that their module design met all of the new performance requirements. The company has since achieved FDA approval for the new system and formally launched commercial sales.

Future Plans:

Noise minimization is important for laboratory equipment. The next generation pipetting module will look to ensure the quietest possible operation. The OEM will be evaluating our proprietary super-finishing process called optiSLITE. This technology removes the largest irregularities left over from thread grinding of the shaft. The resulting surface yields a noticeably smoother and quieter operation.

Motion Control – Steinmeyer Tutorial Series – Ball Screws – Explaining Load Capacity!

Motion Control – Ball Screw Tutorial

Motion Control Ball Screw Tutorial

motion control - steinmeyer

Tutorial presented by Steinmeyer – Many engineers are confused about this topic, especially if they don’t work frequently with ball screws. So let’s take a moment to explain the terminology.

Woburn, MA — There are generally two load capacities given for a particular ball screw: Dynamic and Static.

Dynamic Load Capacity

The dynamic load capacity (DLC) is simply a load rating. It’s the load for a (theoretical) life of 1 million revolutions (ISO/JIS standard) or for 1 million inches of travel (ANSI standard). The DLC is critical for making lifetime calculations, since the expected life goes as the cube of the ratio of DLC to actual load. So, if the load is only 10% of DLC, then the expected life is 1 billion revolutions.

But that still doesn’t mean you could run the screw with this kind of load and expect a to achieve that life! Why? The normal maximum operating load of a general use ball screw is about 30% of the DLC. (Above that, the elastic deformation of the balls and races is too large, which may cause excessive wear.) So, if you run a ball screw with a load equal to its DLC, you may not get as much life as you expect.

Static Load Capacity

The static load capacity (SLC) indicates the load above which the screw may be damaged. Staying below SLC ensures that balls and races don’t suffer brinelling (or plastic deformation). This is critical! But bear in mind that a ball screw may be damaged in other ways with loading below the SLC: you could easily tear off the flange of the nut, snap the bearing or drive journal of the screw, or even collapse it from exceeding the buckling load.

Motion Control – Steinmeyer Tutorial – Ball Screws – Maximum Load!

Motion Control – Ball Screws

Motion Control Components - Steinmeyer Cooled Ball Screws

motion control - steinmeyer

Tutorial presented by Steinmeyer – Their Ball Screws are specially manufactured for dynamic performance

Woburn, MA –Motion Control Tutorial – Ball Screws – Maximum Load

There are five ways a ball screw may fail due to overload:

  • Excessive dynamic loading, which means the screw makes too many revolutions under a certain load resulting in material fatigue. This can be avoided by selecting a ball screw with sufficient dynamic load capacity (or by reducing the number of revolutions and/or reducing the load). This is the subject of the load capacity discussion.
  • Exceeding the static load capacity, which causes instant and permanent damage to the ball screw due to brinelling of balls and races, and prevents any further normal operation of the ball screw. Static load capacities are listed as technical data.
  • Buckling of the shaft under compressive load. Buckling load value depends on bearing method and free length of the loaded ball screw shaft.
  • Failure of the nut body or of the bolts that connect it to the slide. This may happen even before the static capacity is reached. Safe loads are discussed on the following pages.
  • Radial loads. It means the load capacities given in this catalogue apply only to pure axial loading. As there are always tolerances in the alignment of bearings and linear guideways, there may be a small amount of radial force, which should be minimized. Under normal conditions, a radial load less than 5% of the minimum axial load will not cause any problems. When considering a ball screw for use under radial load, please consult Steinmeyer engineers.

BUCKLING

There are several analytical ways to demonstrate safety from buckling. In machine design, the most frequently used is a simple calculation using formulas based on Euler equations.

Other, more accurate methods include non-linear FEM analysis and more involved mathematics. These methods are normally used in aerospace applications, where excess safety margins are not possible due to weight limitations. Please contact us if you require such an analysis.

Please CLICK HERE for a simple form of buckling analysis. Buckling

FRACTURE LOAD

Some ball screws cannot be loaded all the way to their static capacity. Screws with high dynamic load capacity (which might be selected to obtain a long enough service life at a much lighter load) will necessarily have a high static capacity. But the term “static capacity” is misleading, since the ball screw may actually fail due to fracture of the nut flange, nut body, or connecting bolts before reaching this load!

Please CLICK HERE for the maximum safe loads. Fracture Load

TECHNICAL TIP

A reasonable load for a ballscrew, which may be sustained for significant travel, is about 10% of its dynamic capacity.

A mean load of 10% of its dynamic capacity results in a theoretical life of 1 billion revolutions, which is the upper limit of the range where the life equation is valid. Mean loads of a reasonably sized ball screw will therefore be somewhat higher than this, but normally not exceed 20% of its dynamic capacity.

For short peak loads, the loading may be higher, but normally the loading of a ball nut with 2-point contact should not exceed 2.8 times the preload. And preload is around 5% – 10% of dynamic capacity.

As a rule of thumb, this all means the load range for a ball screw, to be used in a machine tool application, is really about 10% to 30% of its dynamic capacity. However Steinmeyer ball screws are used in many applications as force actuators where the loading is up to 100% of dynamic capacity but with low speed and acceleration. For example, they may be used to power injection molding machines, where high forces occur at reduced speed. Please consult our engineers for details.

Please CLICK HERE for information on Accounting for preload.

Motion Control White Paper – Life Expectancy for Single Vs. Double Nut Ball Screws

Motion Control Components – White Paper – Life Expectancy for Single vs. Double Nuts by Steinmeyer!

Motion Control Components - Steinmeyer Single and Double Nuts

Steinmeyer Logo

Life expectancy equations provided by some manufacturers only cover nuts having two-point contact. But what about four-point nuts? And what about the effects of preload?

BURLINGTON, MA –Motion Control Components – The fundamental determining factor of life expectancy is duty cycle, which includes load, thrust, speed, and duration of the travel. Calculating these forces is commonly understood. But preload is a very important factor in ball screw life calculations and must always be considered.  In cases where the applied external load is low, preload can determine as much as 90% of the life.

Steinmeyer engineers have developed a preload graph that consists of two curves: each representing the force-deflection curve of one ball nut in a double nut configuration. It shows how deflections increase with greater force (and vice versa). It also displays how the forces in the opposite nut decrease as soon as deflection results in an axial displacement. For example, with double nuts, the higher the thrust carried by one nut, the more likely it will be the first to fail if not properly preloaded.

Motion Control Components - Steinmeyer Single and Double Nuts Chart

Since single nuts have four-point contact there are twice as many load/unload cycles for each given spot on the ball surface. The preload penalty of the four-point contact configuration is anywhere between a 50% life reduction (if the only force the nut sees is due to preload), and no reduction at all if there is zero preload. Real-world applications fall somewhere in between.

Lastly, if thrust is high enough to cause sufficient deflection, one set of balls in a double nut may run unloaded, which is generally unacceptable and potentially catastrophic. The preload must be high enough to ensure unloading will never occur. This isn’t the case for single nuts since there is no ball set to be unloaded, and exceeding the limits in the preload graph above is not a problem. Therefore, the life penalty depends on preload – life increases as preload is reduced

Motion Control Components – Ultra Thrust Ball Screws from Steinmeyer!

Motion Control – Ultra Thrust Ball Screws
Motion Control Components - Steinmeyer Ultra Thrust Ball Screws

BURLINGTON, MA –Motion Control Components – In recent years, ball screws have been looked at more and more favorably as replacements for hydraulics. They offer higher efficiency and speed, and can be controlled more precisely with servo loops. And who wants to deal with the unavoidable maintenance and disposal hassle of hydraulics?

Steinmeyer has been supporting this market shift with its line of Ultra Thrust ball screws. These screws utilize larger balls to support much greater load capacities. More recently, we have introduced innovations in through-the-nut return systems to push performance even higher.

The Ultra Thrust line began with our 50×20 mm nut using 15 mm balls. Our standard nut of that size, with 9.5 mm balls, was rated at a dynamic capacity of about 120 kN (12 tons). But the Ultra Thrust version exceeded twice the capacity, reaching 262 kN. We then expanded the line to include larger nuts. Most of our Ultra Thrust screws in the field are sized at 80×20 or 63×20.

More recently we extended the line with a 100×25 mm nut, using 19 mm balls. These screws have proved themselves in the most demanding applications of injection molding.

Beyond increasing the ball diameter, Steinmeyer has designed new return systems to optimize the load capacity. Our latest innovation uses multiple through-the-nut return paths, shown in the schematic below. With this system, the screw exceeds 1,400 kN of dynamic capacity!

Motion Control – Cooled Ball Screws from Steinmeyer!

Motion Control – Steinmeyer Ball Screws
Motion Control Components - Steinmeyer Cooled Ball Screws

motion control ball screwsSteinmeyer Ball Screws are specially manufactured for dynamic performance

Woburn, MA –Motion Control Components – When manufacturers use CNC milling machines or machine tools to serially manufacture parts, they expect gage accuracy to be maintained for all manufactured parts and, at the same time, a reduction in the machine’s total non-productive time. For the ball screw drive as a performing part in the power flow, this implies repetitive motion with high rapid traverse speeds and acceleration values. These high dynamic stresses cause unequal heating of the ball screw drive. Preloading increases this heating which seriously reduces the lifetime of the ball screw drive. The transfer of heat to other machine tool parts can adversely affect the accuracy of the work piece. These inaccuracies accumulate during the course of production, with very undesirable impact.

Separate consideration of shaft cooling

Gage accuracy with simultaneous high dynamic performance can only be maintained if operating temperatures are kept constant. It is not always the best solution to cool just one component in the ball screw. The non-uniform temperature rise in the components is accompanied by expansion in diverse directions. The shaft and nut cooling, as well as the type of preloading are separately considered in the initial design phase to ensure the options are correctly combined with the load requirements during the second stage of the design. As a longstanding development partner of renowned machine manufacturers, Steinmeyer offers production-proven solutions.

Motion Control Application – Wearable Pumps for Medical Devices Count on Ball Screws from Steinmeyer!

Motion Control – Application
Motion Control Application - Steinmeyer Ball Screws used in Medical Pumps

motion control - steinmeyer logoWoburn, MA –Motion Control Applications – Motion Control Components – There has been a tremendous amount of innovation lately in the design of medical devices and lab instruments. One of the critical aspects of the new products being developed is linear motion. And Steinmeyer is proud to be directly involved in providing drive solutions to our cutting-edge customers. We currently have several on-going applications involving wearable pumps driven by ball screws, and I wanted to share some of the specifics.

Implantable medical devices naturally place extreme requirements on size, materials, lifetime, and reliability. These constraints drive up cost and complexity. Incorporating all of this function into a single implantable is extremely challenging. Not only that, but servicing the pump requires major surgery!

One solution is to break down the system into two components—one implantable and one wearable. The implantable component handles minimal functionality and consists simply of a balloon. The wearable component enjoys much looser design requirements. In the projects we are working with, a wearable pump is used to drive compressed air through a catheter that passes into the body.

A wearable pump offers the advantages of being small, quiet, and very reliable. That is where precision ball screws come into play. Steinmeyer offers standard miniature screws in diameters 3 to 16 mm. The diameter typically required for this application ranges from 8 to 12 mm. Custom products can be developed as well for applications that need it. Steinmeyer ball screws also feature our proprietary super finishing process, called optiSLITE. This improves the surface quality of the shaft threads for reduced friction torque, quieter operation, and longer life.
