Taunton, MA — Motion Control Products – NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars on February 18th. Was there once life on Mars? This is the question that one of the most complex robotic systems ever built by humankind has set out to answer. Several of maxon’s electric drives are used for handling the soil samples—and to control the first Mars helicopter.

Will NASA, the US space agency, successfully land a fifth rover on Mars, allowing it to start its series of missions to bring Mars soil samples back to Earth? The rover named Perseverance will enter the atmosphere of the Red Planet on February 18th—after traveling a distance of more than 470 million kilometers.

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control Components — Available immediately, the FE060-25-EM is the first servo drive of the new FlexPro™ digital drive family from ADVANCED Motion Controls (AMC). Designed with compact form and power density in mind, the micro-sized FE060-25-EM can outperform larger-sized digital servo drives and still be integrated into tight spaces.

At just 1.5 x 1 x 0.6 inches (38 x 25 x 16 mm) in size, the footprint of the drive is approximately the same as two standard postage stamps. In other words, four of these drives can fit on a standard business card. Even with its small size, the FE060-25-EM can supply brushed, brushless, stepper, and linear servo motors with up to 25 amps continuous current and 50 amps peak current.

Features include:

  • 1.5 x 1 x 0.6 inches (38 x 25 x 16 mm) in size
  • 10-55 VDC supply voltage
  • 25A continuous current
  • 50A peak current
  • Highest power density servo drive from ADVANCED Motion Controls to date
  • EtherCAT Communication
  • Incremental encoder and BISS C-mode feedback
  • Torque, velocity, and position operating modes
  • Configuration and full loop tuning
  • IMPACT™ architecture

A developer version is available for proof-of-concept and testing purposes – part number FD060-25-EM. It comes with an FE060-25-EM soldered to a larger board that is equipped with various connectors for simplified interfacing.

Projected Industries & Applications:

The small size of the FE060-25-EM makes it perfect for cobots (collaborative robots), AGVs, portable devices, lab and warehouse automation, military equipment, and any other integrated design.

About FlexPro™

FlexPro™ is AMC’s newest family of digital servo drives. With cutting edge engineering, FlexPro™ is meant to expand the capabilities of AMC’s already powerful and diverse product selection. The IMPACT™ architecture allows FlexPro™ servo drives to maintain the intelligence and power of larger-sized servo drives while fitting into much more compact packages. The FE060-25-EM is the first drive in the series with many more to come.

About IMPACT™

IMPACT™ (Integrated Motion Platform And Control Technology) is the architecture that makes AMC’s FlexPro™ drives possible. The stacking of circuit boards with creative selection and placement of high-power components allows for much higher power density than previously produced servo drives. The expanded processing capabilities ensure the drive’s intelligence is unmatched. IMPACT™ makes its debut with the FE060-25-EM. This technology will be used in subsequent FlexPro™ drives as well as any future custom products where it is desired.

Motion Control – Customer Driven AC Servo Design

The mid-level, general-purpose 1S Series Servos incorporate valuable input from our customers to optimize use from design to commissioning.

Lower Costs and Total Cost of Ownership
The 1S Series eliminates up to 20% of hidden servo system costs to the customer by no longer requiring separate external parts such as servodrive controller cable, terminal block for I/O, safety cable, brake relay and absolute encoder battery and cable.  Regardless of power rating, all 1S power drives have a uniform height to simplify design and improve control cabinet air circulation. We streamlined I/O connection, replacing an external terminal and cable with a pluggable connector with push-in terminals that allows wiring to be prepared separately. In the process, we increased the number and mix of supported I/O.  The end user benefits from lower maintenance costs.

Advances for High Accuracy Machines
The 1S servomotors use a gear-less/battery-less, multi-turn 23-bit absolute encoder, 16-bit multi-turn to provide accurate position input. Advanced tuning functions help shorten settling time, allowing faster production speeds and greater throughput.
Expanded Built-in Safety Capability

Machine safety for rotating hazards takes a prominent position in equipment design since the recent changes in injury liability. To help OEMs simplify safety system design and standardize on one series without stocking many separate drives, the 1S Series servodrives offer both networked and hardwired safe torque off built in. Configuration of FailSafe over EtherCAT (FSoE) only requires connecting NX Series safety control units to 1S Series servos  via open network “EtherCAT”. No wiring is required for the emergency stop of each axis for servo.
First Wave of 1S Servos

The first wave satisfies 100 W to 3 kW applications. Future releases will address power requirements of higher and lower power ratings.
